Glaucoma

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that can gradually damage the optic nerve, the vital link that carries what you see to your brain. It is often associated with raised pressure inside the eye, and it usually develops slowly over many years. Because it can progress quietly, it may not cause noticeable symptoms until vision has already been affected. Sight lost to glaucoma cannot be recovered, which is why early detection through regular eye examinations matters so much.

Common signs to look out for

In its early stages glaucoma often has no warning signs at all, which is why it is sometimes described as the silent thief of sight. As it progresses, some people may gradually become aware of subtle changes in their vision.

  • Gradual loss of side or peripheral vision
  • Blurred or hazy vision in places
  • Difficulty adjusting to dim or changing light

How we can help

A comprehensive eye examination allows us to measure the pressure inside your eyes, assess the optic nerve and check your field of vision. Where glaucoma is detected early, ongoing monitoring and appropriate care can often help to slow its progression and protect the sight you still have. We can also keep a closer eye on those at greater risk.

Regular check-ups matter for everyone, and especially for those with a family history of glaucoma or who are over the age of 40. If it has been a while since your last visit, we warmly invite you to book a comprehensive eye examination with our practice.
