Cataracts are a common eye condition in which the eye’s natural lens, which is normally clear, gradually becomes cloudy over time. Like many eye conditions they can develop slowly and may not present noticeable symptoms until your vision has already begun to change. Cataracts are a very common part of ageing, and the reassuring news is that they are highly manageable, particularly when picked up early through regular eye examinations.
Common signs to look out for
As a cataract develops, some people find that their vision becomes cloudy, dull or slightly misty, almost as though they are looking through a foggy window. Other changes can appear gradually too.
- Cloudy, blurred or dimmed vision
- Glare or haloes around lights, especially when driving at night
- Colours that seem faded, or a need for brighter light when reading
How we can help
During a comprehensive eye examination we can assess the health of the lens and the rest of the eye, and discuss whether the changes you are noticing may be related to cataracts. Where appropriate, we can explain the options available to you and, if needed, arrange a referral for further care with your interests in mind.
If your vision no longer feels as clear as it once did, we warmly invite you to book a comprehensive eye examination so we can take a closer look and advise you personally.
