Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects the macula, the small but important central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It tends to develop gradually and mainly affects the central field of sight, which we rely on for reading, recognising faces and seeing fine detail. As the name suggests, it becomes more common with age, and early detection can make a meaningful difference to how it is managed.
Common signs to look out for
Some people with AMD begin to notice subtle changes in their central vision, while side vision usually remains unaffected. It is worth being aware of the signs.
- Straight lines that start to look wavy or distorted
- A blurred, dim or dark patch in the centre of your vision
- Difficulty recognising faces or reading fine print
How we can help
A comprehensive eye examination allows us to examine the macula and retina in detail and to monitor any changes carefully over time. Where AMD is detected, we can offer guidance on lifestyle steps that may support your eye health and, where appropriate, arrange onward care so that you feel well supported.
Regular eye examinations are an important part of caring for your central vision as you get older. We warmly invite you to book an appointment with our practice so we can assess your eyes personally.
