Presbyopia

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Presbyopia is the gradual reduction in the eye’s ability to focus on nearby objects, and it typically becomes noticeable from around the age of 40. It is a natural part of ageing that happens as the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible over time, making it harder to switch focus to close tasks. Presbyopia affects almost everyone eventually, so there is no need to feel concerned when it appears.

Common signs to look out for

Many people first notice presbyopia when reading becomes a little more effort, particularly in the evening or in dim light.

  • Difficulty reading small print up close
  • Holding books, menus or your phone further away to focus
  • Eye strain or tiredness during near work
