Vision and Learning

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Clear vision plays a vital role in reading, writing and classroom learning. A large part of what children take in at school comes through their eyes, so an undetected vision problem can quietly make learning harder than it needs to be, even in a bright and capable child. Because children rarely complain, these difficulties can go unnoticed for some time.

Common signs to look out for

Vision-related difficulties are not always obvious, and can sometimes be mistaken for a lack of concentration or effort. Some signs may suggest that a child’s eyes could benefit from a closer look.

  • Losing their place or skipping words when reading
  • A short attention span during close work or homework
  • Headaches, tired eyes or frequent eye rubbing

How we can help

A comprehensive eye examination allows us to check not only how clearly a child sees, but also how well their eyes focus and work together for reading and near tasks. Where support is needed, we can recommend a personalised approach to help them feel more comfortable and confident in the classroom.

If your child is finding schoolwork a struggle, their eyes may be worth checking. We warmly invite you to book a comprehensive eye examination with our practice.
