Astigmatism

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Astigmatism is a common and very manageable condition caused by an irregular curve in the cornea or lens of the eye. Instead of being evenly rounded like a football, the surface is shaped a little more like a rugby ball, so light focuses on more than one point. This can result in blurred or distorted vision at all distances, and it often occurs alongside short-sightedness or long-sightedness.

Common signs to look out for

Astigmatism can be present in mild or more noticeable forms, and its effects vary from person to person. Some common experiences include the following.

  • Blurred or distorted vision at any distance
  • Eye strain or tiredness, especially during focusing tasks
  • Headaches after periods of concentrated near or distance work
