Dry eye Syndrome

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Dry Eye Syndrome occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears, or when the tears you make evaporate too quickly. A healthy tear film keeps the surface of the eye smooth, nourished and comfortable, so when it is disrupted the eyes can feel irritated. It is a common concern that many people experience at some stage, particularly in dry, air-conditioned or windy conditions.

Common signs to look out for

Dry eye can feel different from person to person, and the symptoms are not always what you might expect. Some people find their eyes actually water more as the eye tries to compensate.

  • Grittiness, burning or a feeling of something in the eye
  • Redness, or tired and uncomfortable eyes
  • Watery eyes, or blurred vision that clears when you blink

How we can help

During a comprehensive eye examination we can assess your tear film and the surface of your eyes to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms. From there we can suggest personalised steps, which may include simple lifestyle adjustments or supportive measures to help keep your eyes more comfortable through the day.

If dry, tired or irritated eyes are affecting your daily comfort, we warmly invite you to book an assessment with our practice so we can help you find lasting relief.
