Hyperopia

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Hyperopia, or long-sightedness, can make it more difficult to focus on nearby objects, and in some cases distant vision may be affected too. It occurs when light entering the eye focuses behind the retina rather than directly upon it. Younger eyes can sometimes compensate for a while, but many people find that the right correction makes close work noticeably more comfortable.

Common signs to look out for

The effects of long-sightedness can vary from person to person and often become more noticeable with age or after long periods of near work.

  • Difficulty focusing clearly on close objects
  • Tired or aching eyes during reading or screen work
  • Headaches after periods of concentrated near tasks

A comprehensive eye examination allows us to measure your vision precisely and recommend a personalised solution, whether that is spectacles, contact lenses or other options suited to your needs. Clear, comfortable vision can make everyday tasks such as reading and screen work feel far less tiring.
