Keratoconus

24 July 2026 3 min read Dr Dirk Booysen

Keratoconus is a progressive condition that causes the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, to become thinner and change shape over time. As the cornea bulges into a more irregular, cone-like form, light no longer focuses evenly and vision can become blurred or distorted. It often begins in the teenage years or early adulthood and may change over time, so monitoring is important.

Common signs to look out for

Because keratoconus can develop gradually, its early signs are sometimes mistaken for an ordinary change in prescription. Being aware of the following can help.

  • Blurred or distorted vision that is hard to correct
  • Increased sensitivity to light and glare
  • Frequent changes in your spectacle prescription

How we can help

A comprehensive eye examination allows us to assess the shape and health of your cornea and to monitor any changes over time. Where keratoconus is present, there are various options that may help to support clearer, more comfortable vision, including specialised contact lenses, and we can guide you on what may suit you best.

If your vision seems to be changing more than expected, or is difficult to correct with ordinary glasses, we warmly invite you to book a comprehensive eye examination with our practice.
